This short, informal newsletter is intended to keep IUGG Member National Committees informed about the activities of the IUGG Associations, and actions of the IUGG Secretariat. Abstract Deadline for IUGG General Assembly extended

By general consent, the Perugia General Assembly Local Organizing Committee has agreed to extend the deadline for submission of abstracts and travel grant applications to 28 February if submitted electronically. The deadline to send abstracts by post is February 10. Persons expecting to participate in the IUGG General Assembly should submit these documents as early as possible so that they can be processed efficiently.

Please note that registrations are now being accepted – the form is available on line. The deadline for early registration and accommodation bookings is 30 April. That deadline is firm and cannot be changed.

Special Events At The General Assembly

Welcoming Ceremony The Welcoming Ceremony will be held in the historical center of Perugia in the "Sala dei Notari" of the Town Hall. It will be broadcast in the nearby main square on a wide screen. After the celebration, refreshments will be served. At 10:00 p.m. entertainment displaying allegoric topics on the General Assembly will follow.

IAMAS Special Event: Our Understanding Of Climate Change
This evening event will report the findings of the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (published in early 2007). Representatives of the three IPCC working groups will present overviews of the scientific progress, findings, and the remaining challenges. These talks will address:

  1. trends and projections of atmospheric composition and forcing,
  2. trends and projected changes in climate and sea level,
  3. observed and expected impacts on the environment and society,
  4. capabilities for adapting and building resilience to changes, and
  5. the status of options for limiting emissions through changes in the sources of energy and through carbon sequestration (separation and storage).

IAMAS Special Event: The Assessment Of The Effect Of Pollution On Precipitation In 2003 Congress of the World Meteorological Organization, WMO, and the Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, IUGG, set up the guidelines for an assessment of the effects of pollution and biomass burning on precipitation. Consequently an International Aerosol- Precipitation Science Assessment Group, IAPSAG, was formed under the leadership of the late Prof. Peter Hobbs. This group, now under Prof. Zev Levin, has assembled a report to address the different scientific aspects of possible interactions, and the confidence that can be assigned to the results. The major findings of this Report will be presented at a special evening meeting of interested scientists by the key investigators.
