1. Nominations for IUGG Officers due 30 September

An important matter for the IUGG Council at its meeting in Perugia, Italy, in 2007 will be the election of officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary-General, Treasurer, and 3 Members), and the 4 members of the Finance Committee. The Nominations Committee has the task of collecting the nominations and preparing the ballot, following the rules regarding nominations and elections for these positions (IUGG By-Laws, Section 10). The members of the Nominations Committee are as follows:

Chair: Dr. Sřren Gregersen (Denmark)
Members: Prof. Attia Ashour (Egypt), Prof. Robert Duce (USA), and Prof. Seiya Uyeda (Japan).

Instructions regarding the procedures to be used to submit nominations in accordance with IUGG Statute 11 and By-law 10 are posted on the IUGG Web site and have been mailed to all IUGG officers and Adhering Bodies. The first deadline for nominations is 30 September 2006. Nominations are welcome and needed for all positions. For further information, contact Dr. Gregersen or the IUGG Secretariat.

2. IAHS Abstract Deadline is now 30 September

The deadline for abstract submission for the IAHS Symposia to be held at the IUGG Assembly in Perugia, 3–9 July 2007, is now 30 SEPTEMBER 2006. Please submit your abstracts electronically via the IUGG General Assembly website:

First use JOIN/LOG IN to join the web site. Click on LOG IN and a registration form will appear enabling you to provide a username and password. You will receive an email confirming that you have joined successfully. Close the site (LOG OFF). Now, using the username and password you will be able to LOG IN fully to the site. ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION explains the abstract format required SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME enables you to identify the IAHS session you want to submit to, and there you will be able to SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT by providing the relevant details and copy and paste. The IAHS Symposia follow.

The abstracts for these symposia are required early as the accepted papers will be pre-published (except HS1002) in IAHS Red Books.

HS1001 A new focus on groundwater/seawater interactions
HS1002 Surface water/groundwater interactions
HS1003 Hydrology in mountain regions: observations, processes and dynamics
HS2004 Quantification and reduction of predictive uncertainty for sustainable water resources management
HS2005 Water quality and sediment behaviour of the future: predictions for the 21st century
HS3006 Changes in water resource systems: methodologies to maintain water security and ensure integrated management
HS3007 Remote sensing for environmental monitoring and change detection

Full details of these symposia, the ten IAHS workshops and four symposia/workshops organized jointly with UCCS, IAMAS and IGS, are available at the IAHS website:

3. Report of the GeoUnions meeting

A meeting of representatives of 3 GeoUnions and IYPE (International Year of Planet Earth) was held in Maputo, Mozambique, on 6 July. Items of discussion included relations among the various Unions and ICSU, GeoUnion science team activities and their integration with IYPE scientific themes, and other administrative issues. The GeoUnions will meet again in April 2007 in Rome in conjunction with the mid-term ICSU Unions meeting.

4. Report from the WCRP meeting

The 27th Session of the Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) was held from 6-11 March in Pune, India. The WCRP is jointly sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization, the International Council of Science, and the International Oceanographic Commission. Dr. Michael MacCracken, President of IAMAS, attended as the representative of IUGG/IAMAS and the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR). The new Director of the WCRP office in Geneva, Dr. Ann Henderson-Sellers reported that her key challenge was to develop a new strategic plan for 2006-2011, and she named a number of major questions to be addressed such as range of climate sensitivity, ocean acidification, and governmental and public perceptions of climate assessments. WCRP projects include Coordinated Observation and Prediction of the Earth System (COPES), Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR), Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX), Stratospheric Processes and their Role in Climate (SPARC), Climate and Cryosphere (CliC), as well as a number of others efforts on modelling and observing programs. WCRP was last reviewed in 1995, and a new review is timely.

5. International Consortium on Landslides (ICL)

The International Consortium on Landslides (ICL; ), created in January 2002, is an international non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization supported by UNESCO, WMO, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR), as well as IUGS and a number of other non-governmental and governmental bodies. The Secretariat is located in Kyoto, Japan. In January 2006, a meeting of stakeholders was held that resulted in an action plan to create an International Programme on Landslides (IPL). IUGG has been invited to endorse and participate in this action plan, and the IUGG Commission on Geophysical Risk and Sustainability has agreed to take up these activities. In particular, Dr. Alik Ismail-Zadeh will attend the first IPL Global Promotion Committee in January 2007, and will serve as the IPL point of contact with IUGG Associations that have activities that relate to landslides and related geohazards.

6. Awards and Honors

Professor Charles Vörösmarty of the University of New Hampshire has been appointed to the United States Arctic Research Commission. The Commission, which is composed of seven presidential appointees, is charged with establishing the national policy, priorities, and goals necessary for federal programs in basic and applied scientific research concerning the Arctic. Dr. Vörösmarty directs the Water Systems Analysis Group and the Complex Systems Research Center at the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space (EOS) at the University of New Hampshire. On behalf of IAHS, he served as Secretary of the International Committee on Atmosphere-Soil-Vegetation Relations from 1994-2000 and as its President from 2000 to 2004. He also convened the IAHS Ad Hoc Group on Global Water Data Sets, which highlighted the numerous and persistent problems with access to critical data sets for global water research and resource assessment. He currently serves as an Associate Editor of the Hydrological Sciences Journal.
