Dr. L. Vere Shannon, President, IAPSO
There is no IAPSO medal, nor does IAPSO normally bestow honours and awards. However, today, we have decided to make an exception for an exceptional scientist, in recognition of his fundamental contributions to ocean physics over nearly six decades. It is therefore my privilege on behalf of IAPSO to make a special presentation to Walter Munk. It is not a medal, not a certificate, not a plaque, nor is it another Rolex Oyster! The award is both marine and Australian. It is a painting by a Tasmanian artist and oceanographer, Jock Young. Walter, we know that you admire Jock Young's work, and will also be pleased that it was selected by a very dear friend and colleague of yours, Andrew Forbes. The inscription, which says it all, reads as follows: "To Walter Munk - In recognition of his unique insights into ocean physics and his ability to communicate those ideas with elegant simplicity - IAPSO Melbourne, July 1997". We hope that it will enrich your life and that of your wife, for many years to come.
